Perimeter Drainage to Protect a Foundation

A residential perimeter drainage project to protect a home’s foundation from water damage and move runoff safely away from the structure. This job came with a few challenges: heavy tree roots, a water line and gas line running into the house, and no municipal stormwater connection in the area. Here’s how we got it done.

Locating utilities first

Before any digging started, we located all underground utilities using BC 1 Call along with our own utility locating tools. This let us pinpoint the water line and gas line servicing the home before we broke ground. Once we were close to those lines, we switched to hand digging to expose them carefully and make sure nothing was damaged. On every job, safety comes first.

Excavation

Using a mini excavator, we dug alongside the foundation to expose the footings, carefully working around the many tree roots and utilities in the area. The trench was graded to ensure water flows where it should.

Drainage installation

With the trench ready, we built the drainage system in proper layers:

A dissipation basin

Because there’s no city stormwater connection in this area, we got approval to install a dissipation basin. We excavated a large pit and filled it with 7 yards of 3/4-inch clear crush, creating a reservoir that lets the collected water safely dissipate back into the ground.

We ran the pipe from the downspouts to the basin, glued every connection for a solid, leak-free system, and tied it all together. From there we backfilled with crushed rock, wrapped filter cloth over top to protect the system long-term, and fully restored the area.

Done right, and to code

This perimeter drainage system was installed in accordance with municipal code, with the utility safety, proper grading and quality materials needed to keep this home dry for years to come. From the first locate to the final cleanup, we took the time to do it right.
