French Drain to Reclaim a Backyard

Our customer was dealing with heavy water pooling in his backyard, enough to make the whole space unusable. We installed a French drain system to collect that standing water and carry it away, giving him his yard back.

Careful excavation

We excavated a T-shaped trench running through the backyard to capture water across the whole problem area. The trench was dug down two and a half feet deep, and we worked carefully around the existing sprinkler lines to avoid any damage to the irrigation system.

Building the drain

With the trench ready, we built the system in proper layers:

  • Filter cloth to keep the system clean and free-flowing
  • A clean base of crushed rock
  • 4-inch perforated pipe to collect the standing water
  • Tied directly into the client’s existing perimeter drainage system

Closed up and restored

Once everything was connected, we backfilled, closed the system up, and restored the grass so the yard looked as good as new.

Bonus: a drain camera inspection

Something extra we can offer on projects like this is scoping your perimeter drains. On this job, we sent a camera down the 4-inch pipe and inspected the existing drains around the house. We confirmed they were in good shape and working properly, so the homeowner won’t need to worry about replacing them anytime soon. It’s a simple way to give you peace of mind about what’s underground.
